Inflatable Kayaks

Sea Eagle 380x Kayak

The Sea Eagle 380x is made to be ridden by one or two persons. Now you can do what others only dream of with the most versatile kayak series ever!
Designed to tackle whitewater, open-water, and now down-wind sailing! Large enough for two but small enough for one! The Sea Eagle 380x does it all!

Sea Eagle 380x Kayak Features:

The Sea Eagle 380x Explorer inflatable kayak is as tough as nails and as rugged as the men and women who ride in it. A handy mid-size kayak that holds two to three people and up to 750 pounds, the Sea Eagle 380x lets you rocket fearlessly down Class IV rapids, traverse miles of wilderness rivers to remote camping spots, or fly fish on trout streams that other fishermen can’t access. Even better for travelers, the kayak deflates and stores in a handy carrying bag, so you easily haul it along on a small plane to impossibly obscure fishing or camping sites. There’s no better kayak for true adventurers than the Sea Eagle 380x.
Unlike ordinary “dry-only” kayaks with no drains or “wet-only” kayaks with permanently open drains, the Sea Eagle 380x offers four extra-large, easily convertible drains for both wet and dry conditions. When the drains are open, the craft bails itself in rough whitewater or ocean conditions. When the drains are closed, they won’t let a drop of water in, keeping both you and your cargo comfortably dry in calm water. And even in the worst-case scenario–when your kayak is filled to the gunwales with water–the Sea Eagle 380x still floats.
The Sea Eagle 380x Explorer owes its durability to 1,000-denier, polyester-supported, high-pressure fabric with quadruple-thickness electronic-welded seams. How tough is the Explorer? In torture testing, Sea Eagle 380x pounded it mercilessly with the claw of a claw hammer to no effect. Stabbing it with a screwdriver also had a negligible impact. The “crocodile hide” hull is so sturdy that it can stand up to almost any challenge, let alone a few bumps from the dock. Other details include integrated bow and stern spray skirts with water-deflecting guards; rope lacing that forms secure handholds and convenient tie-down points; two tall-back seats; two 8-foot double-ended paddles; an inflation pump; bow and stern storage bags; and a repair kit.
The Sea Eagle 380x Explorer measures 150 by 37 inches (W x L) and weighs 47 pounds. It’s also backed by a three-year warranty.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • It bails quickly. I have sat, stuck, in a class III rapid, and witnessed the kayak not filling all the way.
  • Space. Despite being the same length as the 370, it has far more elbow room, due in large part to the drop-stitch floor.
  • Material. It’s tough. You’ll have a very hard time puncturing either boat, but especially the Sea Eagle 380x which is far tougher.
  • It sits lower in the water, so it isn’t affected by wind as much.
  • It has a removable skeg. This helps to track better on flat water.
  • You can use either the high back or the low seat, and both secure to the boat.

Cons:

  • The removable skeg. If you are on a rafting trip with stretches of flat and whitewater, just leave it out. It’s annoying having to flip the boat over and take it out, put it in, take it out, put it in. If you are in low water, also, take it out.
  • The self-bail design is poor in comparison to NRS’s boats. With theirs, you are sitting dry; with the Sea Eagle 380x, you are sitting in two inches of water all the time. Since the plugs are on the underside It doesn’t matter whether you have just one or all 16 plugs open.
  • Closing or opening the drain plugs is a royal pain in the rear. Even with the boat completely deflated, it takes effort; with it inflated, you need little monkey hands to get to them.
Conclusion

The Sea Eagle 380x is a powerful, stable, rugged (it is very difficult to puncture this kayak), comfortable and versatile inflatable kayak. I would recommend it for anyone, old or young.
It is not the fastest kayak on the market but it will however get you anywhere you want to go safely and easily. Now that it weighs so much less (the new models weigh 10 pounds less than they used to) you can take it traveling or anywhere you want to go.
I have always considered this kayak like a jack of all trades but a master at none. It can handle many types of water fairly well but will not excel in one area. It offers really good quality for an affordable price and with a little care will likely last a lifetime.
